MiniLap. Technique
What is it?
A way of performing Surgery for removal of uterus after making a very small cut (Mini) on the lowest part of the tummy.
What are the other methods of removing the uterus?
a) Through a big cut on abdominal wall ( either vertical or horizontal). This cut is similar to the one given for Cessarean Section. b) Through Vaginal Route. c) using Laparoscopy.
How is MiniLap. Technique superior to the others methods?
- The cut being small ( 2 to 3 inches.), post-operative discomfort is much less compared to conventional open method using bigger cut.
- As patients’ bowels are not exposed or handled ; patient can start oral intake on the day of operation and full diet the next day
- A larger uterus maybe difficult to remove vaginally. We can remove uterus enlarged upto umbilicus level also thro’ MiniLap. technique.
- Laparoscopy is an excellent technique but requires general anesthesia whereas MiniLap. can be done using regional anesthesia which maintains the patient conscious and bowel movements too start faster.
- Laparoscopy also involves costly Equipments, multiple anesthesia drugs and expensive monitors (hence cost of surgery might increase though basic surgery costs the same).
- Laparoscopy will require 3 or 4 cuts each about 1cm length ( one bigger - about 2-3 cms if we remove larger uterus) and all these cuts are at different locations.MiniLap involves a single cut about 4-6 cms at one level only ( the scar of this will be hidden behind the underwear).
- Using lesser equipments in MiniLap will mean lesser chances of dependency on gadgets & assistants as also lesser complications or mishaps due to their occasional disfunction.
- MiniLap is a modification of an older time-tested surgical method being used since ages. We have modified it to get all advantages of a minimally invasive surgery such as low post-operative discomfort, lesser hospitalization and lower costs.
